Preparation for Friday's Class (12 April 2002)
Read S. LeVay, "A Difference in Hypothalamic Structure Between
Heterosexual and Homosexual Men," Science, 253:
1034-1037. 1991.
To prepare for our discussion, you should read this paper three
times:
- Read quickly. Review the paper and outline (one paper) the
structure of the paper.
- Read in entirety and underline every word you do not understand.
Email a list of these words to Dave by midnight the day before class.
As you read, feel free to consult a biology book, a friend, a teacher,
etc.
- Read one last time for comprehension.
Also on Friday we'll discuss the Carolyn Merchant piece in our
anthology. Be prepared to discuss the following questions:
- What is Merchant's thesis?
- What kinds of evidence does she use in support of her thesis?
- Is there a relationship between her views and those of Evelyn Fox
Keller in the video we saw?
- How are secrets and science related today?
- What was Bacon's vision of the new Atlantis?
- What is the difference between magus and scientist?
