Week One
March 29- April 3.
- Class 1 (Monday, March 29): Introduction to the course. Introductory discussion of electricity: current, voltage, and Ohm's law.
- Class 2 (Thursday, April 2): Thinking about greenhouse
gases. Battery capacity. Introduction to Energy.
- Read Chapter 1 of Sustainable Energy without Hot Air. Bring questions/comments/ideas for discussion
- Assignment 1, due at the beginning of class: Exercises 1.2, 1.5, 1.6, 1.8, 1,10 from Feldman & Demeo (sent via email). Solutions
- Lab 1 (Thursday, April 2): Basic circuits.
- Optional background reading on circuits can be found in the book by Tony Kuphaldt, available here. Sections 1.4 to 1.7 cover basic conceps in electricity. Sections 2.1 and 2.2 cover ohm's law. And sections 5.1-5.3 cover series and parallel circuits. Kuphaldt's book contains far more detail than is needed in this course, but is an excellent (and free) resource for those who want to know a bit more.
